Feedback – Catamaran Live aboard Mauritius
Date: October 20121
Country: Poland
I would like to share my experience about holidays in Mauritius.
We were so impressed about Mauritius beaches, nature, wonderful sea and very comfortable climate.
For a long time before we had been hesitating about sea cruise but decided to do exactly this.
Honestly according to impression of our friends there were no good quality boats for rent there but we found through tour operator Catamaran SADKO.
Price was a bit scaring because pictures are pictures and in theory everything was fine usually, but we decided to take a risk.
Boat
The boat was really amazing, very convenient cabins, spacious, aircon, TV, outside area,– in simple – quality was great really. I can give 5 points from 5 for this boat. Do not even hesitate. Good thing it is new and you can feel it.
Crew
One of the best crew we have ever met, especially thanks to the chef – variety of food, the way of cooking and serving. The only point – we did not try real Mauritian food, mostly he cooked European and Mediterranean food. Very important thing – they did not bother us at all, just when we need something.
Trip
7 days around Mauritus really impressed us, we stopped everyday in new places, visited a lot of beautiful islands. Lagoons, capitan showed us some really inhabitant and protected areas and were the only people there. Honestly from the sea Mauritius can show you real beauty. Thank the crew very much for this. This is really unique experience – especially in some places where there is nobody and some birds fly very close to your face (beautiful white birds)- it was worthy a lot, when you can be in harmony with nature and yourself without crowds of people, listen to yourself and sea. We did not do a lot of entertainment, just watching the nature and maybe we were lucky – we saw dolphins everyday, one it was breath taking to watch dancing whales. Very important also – there were professional equipment for fishing on the boat and we lazy Europeans had chance to learn how to catch big fish and eat sashimi and Carpaccio almost everyday.
Next time we will come here for sure, maybe combine seas and land, but sea experience was great. Thank you Harmony travel, we really were in Harmony.

St Brandon is really renowned for its big population of sharks, but be aware that incident with sharks are extremely rare with scuba divers. Moreover it is advise that fishing shouldn’t been done while people are diving as it might excite sharks. Manta rays have been spotted in St Brandon, with chance you might come across this beautiful giant and inoffensive creature. Pelagic fish as big tuna, king fish, barracudas are common on all dives.EXCLUSIVE ITINERARY . HARMONY TRAVEL 2012 |

All sites are very lively and colourful in terms of tropical fauna as Parrot fish, trigger fish, the babone which is a unique fish at St Brandon and some interesting species of nudibranches. Due to the isolation of this destination, for security all our dives are done in average as from 10 to 20 meters to avoid any risk of decompression. Moreover we had found that life is really abundant in these depths. It is compulsory for all divers to take the MSDA (Mauritius Scuba Diving Association) insurance, moreover we advise clients to take a travel insurance that covers ‘Scuba Diving’, in case of an incident. Please note that dive sites can be often changed due to weather and sea conditions. We are very vigilant on diving security therefore it is our professional diving instructor that will choose dive sites on the actual day. Scuba diving in St Brandon is accessible for everyone. We offer the opportunity for non divers to discover the underwater world. PADI courses can also be done on the cruise. Welcome to get first diving experience! Scuba diving in St Brandon is accessible for everyone. We offer the opportunity for non divers to discover the underwater world. PADI courses can also be done on the cruise. Trip Description As the cruise starts its journey in the Southern Part of the archipelago, two sites that you might explore are ‘Shark Point’ and ‘Umbrina’. |

|
«Shark Point» as the name define the site, sharks are seen on a regular basis, grey sharks and reef sharks are the most common, but with you chance you might observe tiger or bulldogs sharks. Moreover this site offers the beautiful opportunity to observe green turtles, we often seen very old ones. This site is not famous for its corals but the tropical fauna is in abundance. «Umbrina» This site offers a beautiful topography and a nice colourful fauna. Sharks, rays and turtles are generally seen. Tropical fish as parrot fish, trigger fish and babones are always on the spot. The scuba diving adventure will continue on the west part of St Brandon. There are few dive sites around two islets called Fregate and Perle Island. There are few high points and reefs that are interesting to discover. Sharks, turtles and rays are always part of the dive. The northern side of St Brandon offers amazing lively passes. These dives are generally drift dives and are surprisingly lively. Barracudas, giant king fish, tunas are often seen. Sharks, turtles and rays are now becoming common! The lagoon on that side of the archipelago offers amazing colourful dives. Corals are intact and life is in abundance. The scuba diving adventure generally ends in the eastern part of St Brandon. «Passe Gayane» is one of our sites that offer interesting drift dive experience. As all the pass, this dive is home of many pelagic fish as giant trevally, king fish, tunas, barracudas. Sharks arealways around checking divers curiously. Eagle rays are often seen, facing the current and filling themselves with planktons. |

What is your true desire? Anything simply unique? Or mysteriously breathtaking? Naturally awesome? What spirit is running in your blood? A fan of activity, wild nature, the real fishing with adrenalin of each esteemed trophy caught… Are you truly bored with any gorgeous places of this Earth and do not believe that something new can astonish? Then it’s a pleasure to bring you over - St Brandon’s Atoll is exactly a miracle for truly sophisticated discoverers.
Saint Brandon’s (Also known as Cargados Carajos Shoals) is a group of about 16 small islands and islets on an extended reef in the Indian Ocean northeast of Mauritius, coral ridges and vast sand flats which is cut by three major passes and extends 50 km from north to south. |
![]() |
|
The reef area is 190 km². The islands are inhabited by fishermen and the majority of the population lives on Raphael village on Ile Raphael. All these fabulous islands are rich in flora and fauna. The islands belong to Mauritius (300 km south). The fact that Cargados Carajos is a part of the Mascarene Islands is also worthy of being noted. Therefore, the Cargados consist of a number of unnamed islands and sand cays. The total number of islands on the reef is about 50 The flats fishing for Bonefish, Indo-Pacific Permit and a host of Trevally species is simply world class! Interesting fact - for many years foreigners were restricted from visiting St Brandon shores, but thankfully the red tape has finally been cleared to legally allow us to use the luxurious Catamaran Lagoon-500 Sadko for live aboard trips to St Brandon’s. Fully equipped catamaran SADKO with all the extras like air conditioners everywhere inside, watermaker, icemaker, TV, DVD with excellent variety of films and music for any taste, 4 comfortable cabins, set with bathroom each, completely equipped kitchen will let you enjoy trip to St Brandon. Honestly it would be difficult to find better boat for this kind of adventure. |

When using a boat you can catch yellowfin and dog tuna, dorado, barracuda. If you already know how to catch a fly rod, then bring your sea tackle and rods in grades 9-12. |
![]() |
|
Spinning. Who would like to throw a spinning giant predators waiting to take the good poppers. For fishing rod poppers required length of 3-4 meters to test 200-300 grams. Trolling. Sadko catamaran has 6 rodholders and special trolling rods for use with 50LB, 80 LB and 130 LB by Shimano and Penn International. According to our practice we do trolling during the sailing and there some spots for trolling near atoll, especially outside the reef. Marlins and yellowfin tuna are not rare in the area. What is the most important - catamaran Sadko has experienced crew, we know well a lot of spots to show you the best places for different types of fishing in the area. Important note – we strictly follow principle “catch and release” during all our trips and bring fish on the boat only for eat. |

Sadko Catamaran Lagoon 500 Mauritius
|

|
Well, Let's start may be with the most important - navigator's place. In the way of catamaran's direction there is a master's thron equipped with both plotter and navigation tools such as lag amplifier, echo- sounding device and radar. Catamaran engineering is well developed. There are three big engines for constant/usual consumption as well as spare one. Electricity is based on "plug and play" principe- "turn on and forget". That means, instead of big complicated electric panel/indicator board equipped in Lagoon 500 there is simple function Electric panel with three tumblers. No more difficulties! You have everything here: coastal and boat connection, automatic charging distribution. There are 4 water tans on the catamaran with 240 litres capacity each one. It also has Water distiller and 220 V generator with 11Kwa. Worth saying that Sadko won the first place in/concerning all additional equipment during the whole history of Lagoon company. There are more then 10 options installed/implemented for the first time. Engines are hidden in the stern of each hull. Sadko has two diesel 7.5 Volvo motor , each with three blade propellers. Motor modules are wholly isolated from noise and smell. You can hardly hear the noise of engines even in the stern/aft cabin. Four fuel tanks can contain 960 litres which is enough with average consumption for 1000 miles of traveling. Sail control is very rational and simple, that is why it is very convenient to control due to flybridge of Lagoon 500 in comparison with other catamarans which have standard cockpit control. Staysail sheets are placed on gig of the flybridge. For the convenience, You don't have to go down for mainsail settings as running of sail sheet is placed on the stern. Two powerful deck stanchions made from stainless steel are used to improve running. Mainmast is raised with the help of electric gig. Mast is almost 26 m above water level. Shortly saying/In a word, Lagoon 500 is a huge serious boat but with simple control. |

|
Accomodation Entered the cabin, at first you will notice the harmony alliance of space and light. Inside the catamaran is decorated by luxurious light wood. Brand porthole, placed all around the perimeter, creates the feeling of lightness. For both ventilation and light, there are also four huge hatch located on the roof. On the left side, there is an exciting/wonderful caboose, pointed out due to it's special rationality as well as the possibility to bring into life almost all fantasies about exotic gastronomy. Let's talk with a concrete examples: 4 burner gas cooker, double-side sink, 3 refrigerators, 6 freezers, oven, microwave oven, bread baker and other kitchen Household appliances. Under a table, there are lots of foodstuffs cases , which can be enough for traveling throughout the whole Atlantic ocean. For the best comfort and relaxation, there is a king-size L-shape sofa. Enjoy a delicious food while sitting by a perfect dinning table, placing 8 people. Together with it, adding a perfect comfort, there is a plasma television as well as stereo system. The catamaran can place maximum 8 people in 4 cabines. Cabines are very spacious with separate toilets, conditioning, audio- and video system. Due to removable partition, beds can be easily transferred from 2 beds into one double bed. Sleeping area in cabines is comfortably equipped. All shower rooms has separate shower. Each cabine has a huge illuminator, enables You to enjoy gorgeous sea view as well as natural light to come inside. Sadko has enough space for entertainment and holiday organization directly on the catamaran. Due to the first time implemented hardtop, upper top became an ideal place for discussions during the day. On the edge of the catamaran you will find a table, minibars and spacious hammocks. Find other available trips and more info below: |

Throughout this very small informal guide you can learn our recommendations, hoping that you will do an effort to respect them during your trip. PLEASE PAY ATTENTION TO THESE SOME RECOMMENDATIONS TO HELP US TO BETTER PRESERVED AND SAVED THE ISLANDS WATER: is a rare commodity in St Brandon! We depend only on the rain for our reserves. Help us by limiting your shower at a reasonable duration: we wet ourselves, we close the tap, we soap ourselves, and we open the water and rinse! And that’s it! We are as clean and fresh without needing to spend one quarter of an hour in the bath… |
![]() |
|
ENERGY: Save it and be respectful towards our staff by avoiding the extinction of lights and late dinners. Remember also that the light on the islands disturbs the turtles. INTERFERENCE AND NOTIFICATIONS: minimize interference with employees: fishermen, grievers, mechanics, etc. Notify the responsible of the Company if you detect any abnormal behaviours from any employees or other facts necessitating our attention by calling on channels 12 or 16 of your VHF. Thank you for not giving or exchanging alcohol with employees. |

RESPECT OF THE SEA |
![]() |
|
SHARKS: May be you are not aware but sharks are an endangered species here in St Brandon and we have decided to protect them. Our fishermen have understood the message and you should do the same. There is nothing more foolish than fishing a shark just for fun or for its fins, and then let it die. Report any violations or trace of poaching that could help us in this fight. |

Due to the world records, international tournament for marlin fishing held in Mauritius, fishing is truly considered to be royal activity. Mauritius keeps several world records according to International Game Fish Association, including shortfin mako - shark by weight 557 kg, blue shark by 180 kg, Atlantic mackerel by 18.6 kg and white tune by 100.8 kg. According to statistics, there is also a great chance in Mauritius to catch blue marlin weighing more than 200kg, because in March 2011 it was not uncommon to hear news about the catch weighing approximately 400 - 500 kg. For sure much depends on the mood, luck, patience and skills of boat crew. Patience together with always positive mood is extremely important here. You have to remember or revise "The old man and the sea" by Hemingway before coming. Certainly, full day fishing is not enough. Due to the experience we can say - a real trophy needs to be deserved as both the sea and fish in Mauritius have its own features! In order to have an excellent fishing and only positive emotions, also to be highly enjoyed as well as being able to discover the island and get involved into it, we recommend you optimal fishing trip packages. |

An expedition to document the underwater world of a reef in the Saint Brandon archipelago north of Mauritius brings the delights of a dance with jellyfish, green turtles laying eggs and close-up sightings of sharks. Shalini Tewari tells the story. My thumb deflates the last bit of air in my BCD, and like Terminator I sink into the sea. Aware that few have dived here before us, I look up to watch my bubbles rise to the surface, burst, and unify into a confluence of life. 'You'd be crazy to dive here,' forewarn the local fishermen who spawned the name Jurassic Rock for the monstrosities they've seen at this site. The amplified sound of my breath soothes and drowns out my trepidations. Within seconds of synching into the flow however, they resurface when I become aware of my surroundings. We have become the centre of an underwater orbit as 10 to 15 sharks survey the intrusion. Sticking closely together like barnacles, we continue our descent into the depths. Crab-eyed, my glance darts from shark to dive master, shark to dive buddy, to shark. Stay down? Go up? What exactly are we in for? We are on a pioneer dive expedition to the Saint Brandon archipelago, also known as Cargados Carajos Shoals, a group of atolls more than 35 million years old. They were formed when the volcanic island caused by the Reunion hotspot eroded and submerged in the middle of the Indian Ocean more than 300 kilometres north of Mauritius. The majority of the islands are uninhabited and only 20 have been named. I am part of an eight-man crew: the captain, Jean Franf ois Pitot, my hosts Stephane De Senneville and Coraline Cadet of DiveSailTravel, Filmmaker Asael Wiehe, representatives of Harmony Travel, Yulia Kravchenko, Mark Darabos and Percy Narayanasamy, a.k.a. 'Superman'. Our goal is to explore and document the underwater world that exists on the five-kilometre- wide and 50-kilometre-long stretch of reef. We are fully equipped for diving with a compressor station on board and have only one week to taste the salt from just a few of the more than 30 islands. I'm giddy for the adventure. |

|
Our captain is a veteran sailor and fisherman who brings clients of Harmony Travel on fishing charters to Saint Brandon. Flyfishing is the best technique to use here due to the high winds and bonefish average up to three kilograms. At sea the earth awakens and turns to greet the sun. The morning's serenity is broken by a sudden call to attention from the line trolling behind the catamaran. With sparkling eyes, everyone leaps to the back of the boat to catch the first bit of action. Captain Franfois bolts straight to the rod and straps on a bucket. We watch in fascination as he dances a playful jig with the first hook-up. After a vein-bursting 20 minutes, the battle's balance gives way to the captain and a fish rises from the depths. The giant trevally stretches almost a metre long and weighs around 40 kilograms. He releases it back to freedom. The sheer size of the fighter marks our entrance into wild, abundant and untouched territory. |
![]() |
|
The GPS coordinates show arrival at the first specs of land But we can't let fear guide us. We are here to scout an exploration, a discovery, and to share our story. The initial circling parade of sharks escapes being captured however, and so it remains only in our minds, hearts, and shaking of our hands. Once both parties realise the other means no harm, we all continue on our way. The rock sits in the middle of the ocean near South Island and is mostly shark territory. There is no choice but to get used to their presence. |
![]() |
|
We decide to check out the nightlife on Coco Island, so at midnight, in full moon light, we climb onto our inflatable raft and go to the beach. The life we've come in search for requires discretion so we pair off into groups to scour the scene. When our feet start to drag, we stop to bask in the light and draw constellations in the sand, barely noticing the creature that appears silently out of the dark. We watch this spiritual phenomenon from a distance and marvel at the act of nature. Aware that any artificial light or slightest disturbance will cause the turtle to return to sea without fulfilling her deed, we use only our eyes to see. Awed by the experience, we quietly make our way back to the boat and snuggle into bed enriched by our first night at Saint Brandon. |
![]() |
|
We make our way north along the west coast and stop at Chalupe Island. It is a small island covered with sculptured shells, low-lying bushes, and beaches covered in a combination of white sand and parrotfish contributions. The white-tailed tropicbirds show no fear and allow a close distance to their young. The water is so clear that we can spot shadows of sharks and rays from more than 20 metres away. We follow them from the beach, tripping over one another like school kids in a playground. |

|
This is the major fishing base of Raphael Fishing where around 20 fishermen, five coast guards and two meteorologists stay. Some of the fishermen live here year-round, while others only for about two to three months. The company line fish mostly emperor at approximately one ton of fish per day, which is sold to mainland Mauritius either dried and salted, or chilled on ice. |
![]() |
|
We hear news that there is a cyclone near Mauritius and one north of Saint Brandon. Stuck like an o-ring between the two, we are lucky to have avoided being trapped in one. |

Francois fishes with barbless hooks that either fall out when the fish shakes its head or disintegrate after two weeks. When I ask about the impacts of luxury catamarans at the islands, he explains that they try to minimise the effects. They don't turn on the air conditioner at their destination, for example, and use the engine only when necessary. 'Tourists who visit must respect the rules. Divers are usually environmentally conscious so fishing and diving trips could peacefully coexist and learn from one another.' International tourists need to apply for a permit one month in advance in order to visit the islands and only a limited number of tourists in general are allowed at a time. Currently, environmental legislation, joint approaches to coastal zone management, mandatory environmental impact assessment, education and awareness, and MPAs are only very slowly being made effective. |

To our complete delight, he delivers us in front of a congregation of about 20 rays, which we approach and watch from a distance. Once they feel our presence, like magic they vanish into a poof of sand. The team decides it is best I go in alone next time to photograph so I spend my final hours in Saint Brandon in a synchronised duet with a ray. Solemnly, we make our final preparations forthe journeyback to Mauritius. I take a few moments on the hammock smiling in the sun. We gather at the bow with a glass of wine and celebrate the slice ofheaven we have just shared. From our box seat we had listened to the sun and the stars sing, watched the moon breathe fire and the sea dance. The intense, untouched beauty of Saint Brandon is so pure it feels make-believe. With the moon at its third quarter, the stars shone layers so thick the Milky Way turned to cream. About halfway back we stop at Soudan Bank. It is a group of underwater high points and reefs on the Mascarene plateau extending 2 000 kilometres from the Seychelles to Reunion Island. Its depths range from eightto 150 metres and plunge to 4 000 metres into the abyssal plain at its edges. Together with Cargados Carajos, Soudan was a large island more than 10 times the size of Mauritius until it eroded and submerged beneath the ocean. The bank is abundant in big game fish such as marlin and tuna. We catch tuna to ease our sashimi cravings in Mauritius and I fish for the first and last time in my life after a 20-minute battle with a 35-pound tuna, both worse for wear on arrival. Feeling slightly melancholic as we approach civilisation, I feel a tug on the line I left behind in Saint Brandon. The radio blares a Bollywood song that initially feels like an attack on our ears. The curtains draw to a close on this trip, but I catch myself singing along with the tune, and excitedly wait for the double bill featuring Mauritius to begin. Find other available trips below:
